about

Pianarchy. Anarchy on the piano, which in the wrong hands would be chaos. But there is order and beauty in chaos, and in the right hands, Pianarchy can yield powerful and unexpected results. Enter Robbie Gennet.

A hallucinogenic Keith Jarrett for the 21st century, Gennet shatters the boundaries of genre, time and space to bring you a new kind of music through the portal of the acoustic piano. Melodic transients lead the listener away from harmonic convention into a morphing, yearning, twisting, turning journey that promises the mind untold realms of polyrhythmic delight. Just when you think you’ve pinned him down, Gennet takes unexpected tangents and drops the floor from under your expectations. The universe of Pianarchy is boundless.

Though familiar enough to immediately grok, make no mistake: this is new music, evolved from Gennet’s imaginative amalgamations of the jazz, blues, rock, pop and boogie that he’s steeped his brain in. Though of no classical training, Gennet emits flourishes of that eras sensibilities filtered through a self-taught understanding of music and a natural born feel for the piano. But Gennet also cites non-musical influences in his conceptualizations, such as the ocean or a swarm of bees.

Taking an instrument as storied as the acoustic piano into new realms isn’t a game for everyone. Iconoclasts like Jarrett, Brian Haas (JFJO) and Mike Garson (David Bowie) have mapped out new universes of their own devising on an instrument which equalizes the playing field but not the game. Gennet spins his own galactic explorations with the ease of a man unbound by convention, label or category. There are no signs for eventual destinations, no themes to return to, no single script to follow. These wholly improvised pieces are the musical flow of consciousness where Gennet’s untethered mind finds itself wandering in and of the moment, begun from tabula rasa blank space and conjured from the ether.

Without foreshadowing, pathways unfold in newly constructed matrixes, skirting familiarity but staying off the beaten paths. Pianarchy is meant to be this way, a constant search outside of boxes, lines and scales into a real time morphing evolution and invention, a glimpse into fleeting dimensions and portals to the past and the future.
