Candyapple 02:59
Don’t these emotions seem real? Is it the touch or the feel of my skin? I don’t think she was into this life. So Candy ate the apple and committed to the knife. What have you done with your time? How many holes did they find in your skin? Lucky clover drained the color, it was white; So Candy ate the apple and committed to the knife. I never reached you; you must have been down with a candy cane. But you’ve got your reasons for letting go. And I’ll never leave you. Nobody’s ever chosen to be different, and you’re the one… and you’ll never know. So Candy ate the apple and committed to the knife. © 1995 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

Soul Train 02:42
A runaway locomotive came to rest in a field of rye; daddy prepared the motive but he had no alibi. Some one should have warned daddy about the rats outside the door, but nobody moved a muscle; they did the Hustle on the dance floor! On the Soul Train coming into town we like to watch them dance when Don Cornelius gets ‘em down on the Soul Train on Saturday night; babysitter naturally would never get uptight! A juiced up El Torino rolled like thunder down the street and no one dared to wonder if that thunder could be beat. Someone told the mayor about the people who loved to dance, and Friday became Boogie Day to give everyone else a chance to boogie on Soul Train! coming into town we like to watch them dance when Don Cornelius gets ‘em down on the Soul Train on Saturday night; babysitter naturally would never get uptight! © 1996 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

Go 02:36
The people who have it use it to get what they need; they trip on a tablet, ‘cause it feels so good to speed. And nobody comes down, ‘cause they never want you to know that this is the way that they wanted to go. Somebody happened to breathe in some terrible fumes; it’s hard to imagine her head wasn’t filled with balloons. And nobody realized that she wouldn’t want them to know that this is the way that she wanted to go. You didn’t put it in, so you couldn’t get it out; you spent your life living in the shadow of doubt. You never really knew what it was all about, but you’ll find out… cause you wanted to go. And there were never times I thought we’d last forever. And there were good times then- that’s why this good time has to end. The people who need it use it to get what they want; they show it to everybody, ‘cause it feels so good to flaunt. And nobody asks you if you wouldn’t want them to know that this is the way that you wanted to go. © 1996 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

M'Brain 01:47
Someone tried to reach the sack; tied it to their back, and started to run. And something stopped them in their tracks, put nails through their backs, and pulled out a gun, and he said Check out m’brain; maybe you don’t believe me when I tell you about my pain. Like time on the clock in the belly of an alligator, someone must hear me crawling up the chimney… You tried breathing through the ice; I looked at you twice as you floated away. And you see everything you feel except what is real, and you have nothing to say but Check out m’brain; maybe you don’t believe me when I tell you about my pain. Like time on the clock in the belly of an alligator, someone must hear me crawling up the chimney trying to follow the sun. © 1996 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

Did someone ask you if you know just what it takes to rule the world? You could be standing on the top looking down on everybody else. I know it’s hard to find emotion in this broken world; don’t you think I’ve tried? I’m not the one to tell you everything is grand~ not when your happiness has died… Leave it alone… take it away. Did someone make you want to see those pretty colors in the sky? You could be staring at the sun looking up to see yourself. I know it’s hard to find construction in this broken world; don’t you think I’ve tried? I’m not the one to hold the lightning in my hand~ not when my happiness could die… Leave it alone… take it away. Did someone leave you by yourself without a light to lead the way? You should be standing on the moon looking down on all of us. I know it’s hard to find redemption in this broken world; but someone always tries. I’m not the only one who’s out to save himself before this body up & dies. Leave it alone… take it away! © 1996 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

Corduroy 02:35
Bookmark girl takes a taste; she sticks her tongue into the paste. Pissing in the yellow bus will ruin it for all of us. Trademark apple, pocket comb; notebook stickers, going home. Bobby’s brilliant, Susie’s cool- see them kissing after school! “Come and feel my Corduroy”, he says to her. The shadow boy is watching you. Come and run on the field at three I’ll chase you down if you want me to catch you… and I’ll catch you if I can. Crispy chicken afternoons, the special smell of diesel fumes vinyl seats in cars of brown will slowly wash the sunshine down. Meetcha at the pizza shop for sugarshakes and sodapop; the waitress looks like Marilyn Monroe, and she says they all think so. “Come and feel my Corduroy”, he says to her. The shadow boy is watching you. Come and run on the field at three I’ll chase you down if you want me to catch you… and I’ll catch you if I can. On the playground, slides and swings are hip, and so’s that metal rocketship we play on. At recess on the monkeybars, pretending we are movie stars, we push & fall into the dirt ‘cause no one can get really hurt! Bookmark girl, she takes a taste; she sticks her tongue into the paste. Pissing in the yellow bus will ruin it for all of us. Meetcha at the record shop for some groovyacidboogiepop; the waitress looks like Marilyn Monroe and she says they all think so. “Come and feel my Corduroy”, he says to her. Feel To Me 03:24
FEEL TO ME A little deeper in the ditch; dig the tunnel, throw the switch, and put a little honey in your tea. You want to know the way you feel to me? and I’d like to know if they can see that our lives are never quite perfect, and maybe somebody else will understand. A little lighter on the top; assist the flyers when you drop a little bit of sugar in your tea. You want to know the way you feel to me? and I hope you know that they can see that our lives are never quite perfect, and maybe nobody else will understand. I don’t want to suffer alone, ‘cause if I make it back to my home, then I want you to know that I ain’t afraid of dying, oh no… You want to know the way you feel to me? Do you care at all if they can see that our lives are never quite perfect, and maybe everyone else can’t understand. Take all your tennis shoes & put ‘em in a sack. Tell all the casket queens that you won’t be coming back. Try a little salt upon your wounds they’ll taste better every time. © 1996 Brown Earthling Music All Rights Reserved

about

This was originally available as a cassette of home recordings by Robbie Gennet. Released in the wake of the break of of his eponymous band, Robbie branched off from acoustic piano-driven rock into electric guitars, lots of effects pedals and a Wurlitzer electric piano. Some of these songs were live staples in Robbie's solo shows and two of them ("Soul Train" and "Corduroy") were re-recorded for 2015's "Green Tea & Blueberry Pie" album. At the time, the recording setup was pretty primitive: a Tascam 488 cassette 8-track, on SM58 mic, a Zoom guitar effects box, an Alesis SR16 drum machine, a Wurlitzer electric piano, a Fender Telecaster and a Fender Jazz bass. A lot of the vocals were sung through the Zoom to explore different vocal textures. These songs were different, branching out into funk ("Soul Train") punk ("Leave it Alone") quirky pop ("Corduroy", one of Robbie's best known solo tracks) and the psychedelic swirl of "Candyapple." There were many more songs demoed from this time period but these seven tracks made it to the cassette release. Happy listening!
